In memory of Professor Michael Lucenko

It is with great sadness that we write to inform you that Academician Michael Lucenko, PhD, emeritus professor of medicine at the Far Eastern Scientific Center of Physiology and Pathology of Respiration of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Emeritus Member of the Editorial Board of IJBM, died yesterday morning, October 9.
Michael Lucenko was born on May 16, 1930. He was a kind, sincere, generous person who devoted his entire life to the advancement of medical science, and to the support of the dignity and honor of profession.
Michael Lucenko was widely known for his works in the field of general pathology, morphology, human histology, embryology, and pathological physiology. He was one of the founders of the Siberian scientific school of morphological and functional studies in the field of the nonspecific diseases of the respiratory system. Lucenko’s scientific accomplishments also significantly advanced the clinical care of people infected with herpes simplex virus and cytomegalovirus.
Michael Lucenko was the Founder and first Director of the Far Eastern Scientific Center of Physiology and Pathology of Respiration of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Founder and Editor-in-chief of the journal Bulletin of Physiology and Pathology of Respiration from  1998 until the last day of his life. He was the author of over 600 publications, including 38 monographs, and creator of 100 inventions. Michael Lucenko was honored with the Hildes medal for his active work on the problem of “Circumpolar medicine”. Michael Lucenko was an honored scientist of Russia and honorary professor of a number of Russian and world scientific institutions. He will be greatly missed.
